Draupadī–Bhīmasena Dialogue on Suffering, Kāla, and Daiva
योद्धयमानं महावीर्यमियं समनुशोचति । कल्याणरूपा सैरन्ध्री बललवश्वापि सुन्दर:,“यह पवित्र मुसकानवाली सैरन्ध्री पहले (युधिष्ठिरके यहाँ) एक स्थानमें साथ-साथ रहनेके कारण पैदा होनेवाले स्नेहसे अथवा धर्मसे प्रेरित होकर उस महापराक्रमी रसोइयेको पशुओंसे लड़ते देख उसके लिये बार-बार शोक करने लगती है। सैरन्ध्रीका रूप तो मंगलमय है ही, बल्लव भी बड़ा सुन्दर है
yoḍḍhayamānaṃ mahāvīryam iyaṃ samanūśocati | kalyāṇarūpā sairandhrī ballavo ’śvā api sundaraḥ ||
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: Nang makita ni Sairandhrī—ang dalagang may mapalad at kaaya-ayang anyo—ang makapangyarihan at bayaning kusinero na nakikipaglaban, paulit-ulit siyang nagdalamhati para sa kanya—maaaring dahil sa paglingap na nabuo sa dati nilang pagsasama (sa sambahayan ni Yudhiṣṭhira) o dahil sa udyok ng dharma. At si Sairandhrī ay may pinagpalang kagandahan; si Ballava man ay guwapo, gayundin ang mga kabayo.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic compassion: even amid necessary violence, a righteous person’s heart responds with concern for another’s welfare. Affection born of shared life and duty grounded in dharma both become legitimate motives for empathetic grief.
During the Pāṇḍavas’ incognito stay, Ballava (Bhīma disguised as a cook) is seen fighting. Sairandhrī (Draupadī disguised as a maid) watches and repeatedly laments for him, prompted by prior closeness in Yudhiṣṭhira’s household and/or by dharma.
