Ajñātavāsa-saṅkalpaḥ — Yudhiṣṭhira’s Resolve and Dhaumya’s Exempla on Concealment
यम उवाच पतिव्रतासि सावित्रि तथैव च तपो<न्विता । अतस्त्वामभिभाषामि विद्धि मां त्वं शुभे यमम्,यमराज बोले--सावित्री! तू पतिव्रता और तपस्विनी है, इसलिये मैं तुझसे वार्तालाप कर सकता हूँ। शुभे! तू मुझे यमराज जान
yama uvāca: pativratāsi sāvitrī tathaiva ca tapo'nvitā | atas tvām abhibhāṣāmi viddhi māṁ tvaṁ śubhe yamam ||
Wika ni Yama: “Sāvitrī, ikaw ay matatag sa katapatan bilang asawa at gayundin ay pinagkalooban ng lakas ng pag-aayuno at pagninilay. Kaya maaari kitang kausapin. O mapalad, kilalanin mo ako bilang si Yama, ang Panginoon ng Kamatayan.”
यम उवाच
Moral and spiritual authority is recognized by Yama in Sāvitrī’s pativratā-dharma and tapas; virtue grants one the standing to engage even Death in meaningful dialogue.
Yama identifies himself to Sāvitrī and explains why he will converse with her: her unwavering devotion to her husband and her ascetic merit make her worthy of being addressed directly.
