स्कन्दोपाख्यानम् — उत्पातशान्तिः, स्वाहारूपविचारः, कौमारमङ्गलक्रियाः

मार्कण्डेय उवाच इत्युक्त: स प्रविश्याथ ददर्श परमार्चितम्‌ । सौध॑ हृद्यं चतु:ःशालमतीव च मनोरमम्‌,मार्कण्डेयजी कहते हैं--धर्मव्याधके ऐसा कहनेपर कौशिक ब्राह्मणने भीतर प्रवेश करके देखा--एक बहुत सुन्दर साफ-सुथरा घर था, उसकी दीवारोंपर चूनेसे सफेदी की हुई थी। उसमें चार कमरे थे, वह भवन बहुत प्रिय और मनको लुभा लेनेवाला था, ऐसा जान पड़ता था, मानो देवताओंका निवासस्थान हो। देवता भी उसका आदर करते थे। एक ओर सोनेके लिये शय्या बिछी थी और दूसरी ओर बैठनेके लिये आसन रखे गये थे। वहाँ धूप और चन्दन, केसर आदिकी उत्तम गन्ध फैल रही थी

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca | ity uktaḥ sa praviśyātha dadarśa paramārcitam | saudhaṃ hṛdyaṃ catuḥśālam atīva ca manoramam |

Sabi ni Mārkaṇḍeya: “Nang masabi iyon, pumasok siya sa loob at nakita ang isang tahanang lubhang pinararangalan—isang marikit at kaaya-ayang bahay na may apat na silid, labis na nakalulugod sa isip. Ang anyo nito’y wari’y lugar na dapat igalang, na para bang tirahan ng mga diyos. Sa diwang pang-dharma ng salaysay, ipinahihiwatig ng tanawing ito na ang tunay na dharma ay maaaring manahan sa pinakahindi inaasahang dako: ang panlabas na kasimplehan o katayuang panlipunan ay hindi sukatan ng panloob na kadalisayan, pagkamapagpatuloy, at kabutihang-loob.”
