Prelude to the Birth of Kārttikeya/Skanda
अविद्याबहुलो मूढ: स्वप्रशीलो विचेतन: । दुर्हषीकस्तमो ध्वस्त: सक्रोधस्तामसो&5लस:,जिसमें अज्ञानकी बहुलता है, जो मूढ़ (मोहग्रस्त) और अचेत होकर सदा नींद लेता रहता है, जिसकी इन्द्रियाँ वशमें न होनेके कारण दूषित हैं, जो अविवेकी, क्रोधी और आलसी है, ऐसे मनुष्यको तमोगुणी जानना चाहिये
vyādha uvāca | avidyābahulo mūḍhaḥ svapraśīlo vicetanaḥ | durharṣīkas tamo dhvastaḥ sakrodhas tāmaso 'lasaḥ ||
Wika ng mangangaso: “Ang taong pinangingibabawan ng kamangmangan—naliligaw, walang kamalayan, at palaging nahuhumaling sa pagtulog; na ang mga pandama’y mahirap pigilin kaya nadudungisan; na walang paghatol, madaling magalit, at tamad—ang gayong tao ay dapat kilalaning tamasic, pinaghaharian ng katangian ng dilim.”
व्याध उवाच
The verse defines the marks of a tamasic disposition: dominance of ignorance, dullness and sleepiness, lack of awareness, uncontrolled senses leading to moral impurity, anger, and laziness. It teaches ethical self-assessment through the lens of the guṇas.
In the dialogue, the hunter (vyādha) is instructing the listener by classifying human behavior according to qualities (guṇas). Here he describes the traits by which one should recognize a person dominated by tamas.
