Kṛṣṇa at Duryodhana’s House: Refusal of Hospitality and Departure to Vidura (कृष्णस्य धार्तराष्ट्रनिवेशनगमनम्)
विनीतक्रो धहर्षश्न ब्रह्माण्या: सत्यवादिन: । त्यक्त्वा प्रियसुखे पार्था रूवतीमपहाय माम्
Vaiśampāyana uvāca — vinīta-krodha-harṣāś ca brāhmaṇyāḥ satya-vādinaḥ | tyaktvā priya-sukhe pārthā ruvatīm apahāya mām vanaṃ prati yayuḥ ||
Sinabi ni Vaiśaṃpāyana: “Napagtagumpayan ng mga Pārtha ang galit at labis na pagdiriwang; sila’y nakatuon sa kapakanan ng mga brāhmaṇa at matatag sa pagsasabi ng katotohanan. Ngunit, dahil sa kawalang-katarungan ng kanilang mga kaaway na nagpilit sa kanila, tinalikuran nila ang minamahal na ginhawa at ligaya at, iniwan akong humahagulgol, sila’y tumungo sa gubat.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Ethical excellence is marked by inner discipline (mastery over anger and elation), truthfulness, and concern for dharmic social order (support of brāhmaṇas). Yet even the righteous may be forced by others’ injustice into painful renunciation—showing that dharma often requires sacrifice rather than comfort.
The narrator describes the Pāṇḍavas as virtuous and self-controlled, but explains that due to the wrongdoing of their enemies they abandon beloved pleasures and depart for the forest, leaving their mother behind in grief.
