Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 71 — Kṣatra-dharma Counsel, Public Legitimacy, and Mobilization
आखयातारश्न विद्यन्ते पुमांश्चेद् विद्यते कुले दीर्घकालतक मनमें दबाये रखनेपर भी वैरकी आग सर्वथा बुझ नहीं पाती; क्योंकि यदि कोई उस कुलमें विद्यमान है, तो उससे पूर्वघटित वैर बढ़ानेवाली घटनाओंको बतानेवाले बहुत-से लोग मिल जाते हैं ।।
ākhyātāraś ca vidyante pumāṃś ced vidyate kule | dīrghakālatakaṃ manye dabāye rakṣite 'pi vaiḥ | na hi vairāgnir atyantaṃ śāmyati yadi kaścid asti kule || na cāpi vairaṃ vairena keśava vyupaśāmyati ||
Sinabi ni Yudhiṣṭhira: “Laging may mga tagapagsalaysay—habang may natitira pang kahit isang lalaki sa angkan. Kahit itago at pigilin nang matagal ang poot, sa palagay ko’y hindi kailanman ganap na namamatay ang apoy ng alitan; sapagkat kung may nabubuhay pa sa pamilyang iyon, marami ang masusumpungang magbabalik-salaysay ng mga dating pangyayari na muling nagpapaliyab sa lumang hinanakit. At, O Keśava, ang poot ay hindi napapawi ng poot.”
युधिछिर उवाच
Hatred cannot be ended by hatred; old feuds persist because people keep recounting past injuries, so true pacification requires restraint, forgiveness, and deliberate de-escalation rather than retaliation.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war deliberations, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Keśava (Kṛṣṇa), reflecting on how clan-based enmities survive across time through memory and storytelling, and warning that responding with further hostility only perpetuates the feud.
