Sanatsujāta–Dhṛtarāṣṭra Saṃvāda: Pramāda as Mṛtyu

Chapter 42

ज्ञानेन चात्मानमुपैति विद्वा- नथान्यथा वर्गफलानुकाडक्षी | अस्मिन्‌ कृतं तत्‌ परिगृहा सर्व- ममुत्र भुड़क्त्वा पुनरेति मार्गम्‌,तब वह दिद्दान्‌ पुरुष ज्ञानसे परमात्माको प्राप्त होता; किंतु इसके विपरीत जो भोगाभिलाषी पुरुष धर्म, अर्थ, और कामरूप त्रिवर्गफलकी इच्छा रखते हैं, वे इस लोकमें किये हुए सभी कर्मोंको साथ ले जाकर उन्हें परलोकमें भोगते हैं तथा भोग समाप्त होनेपर पुनः इस संसारमार्गमें लौट आते हैं

jñānena cātmānam upaiti vidvān athānyathā varga-phalānukāṅkṣī | asmin kṛtaṃ tat parigṛhya sarvam amutra bhuṅktvā punar eti mārgam ||

Wika ni Sanatsujāta: Sa tunay na kaalaman, nararating ng marunong ang Sarili (Ātman). Ngunit ang taong kabaligtaran—na naghahangad ng bunga ng tatlong layunin ng buhay (dharma, artha, kāma)—dinadala niya ang lahat ng nagawa niya sa mundong ito, tinatamasa ang mga bunga sa kabilang buhay, at kapag naubos ang pagtatamasa, bumabalik siyang muli sa landas ng makamundong pag-iral.

Educational Q&A

Knowledge (jñāna) leads the wise to realization of the Self, whereas craving for the fruits of dharma, artha, and kāma binds one to karma: the person enjoys results in the next world and then returns to saṃsāra when those results are exhausted.

In Sanatsujāta’s instruction (within Udyoga Parva), he contrasts two life-orientations: the knower who seeks the Self and the reward-seeker who pursues worldly aims, thereby continuing the cycle of post-mortem enjoyment and return to worldly existence.
