Udyoga Parva, Adhyāya 38
धृतराष्ट उवाच सर्व त्वमायतीयुक्तं भाषसे प्राज्ञसम्मतम् | न चोत्सहे सुतं त्यक्तुं यतो धर्मस्ततो जय:,धृतराष्ट्रने कहा--विदुर! तुम जो कुछ कह रहे हो, परिणाममें हितकर है; बुद्धिमान् लोग इसका अनुमोदन करते हैं। यह भी ठीक है कि जिस ओर धर्म होता है, उसी पक्षकी जीत होती है, तो भी मैं अपने बेटेका त्याग नहीं कर सकता
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca sarvaṁ tvam āyatīyuktaṁ bhāṣase prājñasammataṁ | na cotsahae sutaṁ tyaktuṁ yato dharmas tato jayaḥ ||
Wika ni Dhṛtarāṣṭra: “Ang lahat ng sinasabi mo ay nakatuon sa kabutihang darating at sinasang-ayunan ng mga pantas. Totoo rin na ang tagumpay ay nasa panig na kinatatayuan ng dharma; subalit wala akong lakas ng loob upang talikuran ang aking anak.”
धृतराष्ट उवाच
Even when one intellectually recognizes that dharma determines true victory, personal attachment (especially to family) can obstruct ethical action; the verse highlights the gap between moral insight and moral courage.
In the lead-up to war, Dhṛtarāṣṭra responds to Vidura’s prudent advice: he admits Vidura’s words are wise and beneficial and agrees that the righteous side wins, but confesses he cannot bring himself to renounce or restrain his son.
