Bhishma and Rama: Restraint and Withdrawal in the Engagement
तदनन्तर उन महर्षियोंके देखते-देखते उस साध्वी एवं सुन्दरी कन्याने उस वनसे बहुत- सी लकड़ियोंका संग्रह किया और एक विशाल चिता बनाकर उसमें आग लगा दी। महाराज! जब आग प्रज्वलित हो गयी
tadanantaraṁ un maharṣiyoṁ ke dekhate-dekhate us sādhvī evaṁ sundarī kanyāne us vanase bahuta-sī lakṛiyoṁ kā saṅgraha kiyā aura eka viśāla citā banākara usmeṁ āga lagā dī | mahārāja! jab āga prajvalita ho gayī, taba vah krodhase jalate hue hṛdayase bhīṣmake vadhakā saṅkalpa bolakara us agnimeṁ praveśa kara gayī | rājan! is prakāra kāśirājkī vah jyeṣṭha putrī ambā dūsare janmameṁ yamunānadīke kināre citākī āgameṁ jalakara bhasma ho gayī ||
Pagkaraan, sa harap ng mga dakilang rishi, ang dalagang banal at marikit ay nagtipon ng maraming panggatong mula sa gubat, nagtayo ng isang malaking puneraryang siga, at sinindihan ito. O Maharaja, nang magliyab na ang apoy, taglay ang pusong nag-aalab sa poot, binigkas niya ang panatang ikapapahamak ni Bhīṣma at pumasok sa apoy. O Hari, sa gayon si Ambā, ang panganay na anak na babae ng hari ng Kāśī, ay natupok at naging abo sa pampang ng ilog Yamunā.
भीष्म उवाच
The passage highlights how a fixed vow born of unresolved injustice and anger can carry across lives, shaping karmic outcomes. It cautions that personal injury, when converted into consuming wrath, can become a destiny-making force that later fuels wider conflict.
Ambā, watched by sages, gathers wood, builds a pyre, and enters the fire after declaring her resolve to cause Bhīṣma’s death. She is burned to ashes on the Yamunā’s bank, setting the stage for her purpose to be pursued in a subsequent birth.
