Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical weight of saṅkalpa (firm resolve) and the role of wise counsel: intense vows like tapas should be undertaken with clarity of purpose, and elders/ascetics may question and test one’s intention before allowing a difficult path.

In the Ambā episode, Bhishma narrates that when Ambā (in her subsequent birth-context) is seen determined to perform austerities, the assembled ascetics try to dissuade her and ask what goal she seeks—setting up her stated purpose and the ensuing events.
