Udyoga Parva Adhyāya 132 — Vidura’s Counsel on Udyama, Yaśas, and Kṣātra-Dharma

इस इतिहासमें जो कल्याणकारी उपदेश हो

ānandana mayā jāta dviṣatāṁ harṣavardhana | na mayā tvaṁ na pitrā ca jātaḥ kvābhyāgato hāsi ||

Sa kasaysayang ito, anumang aral na nakapagpapabuti, sabihin mong muli nang wasto sa harap ni Yudhiṣṭhira. May isang babaeng kṣatriya na tanyag sa pangalang Vidulā—isinilang sa mabuting angkan, marangal ang pangalan, maningning ang lakas, may dangal, napipigil ang mga pandama, tapat sa dharma ng kṣatriya, at malayo ang tanaw. Sa lupon ng mga hari, dakila ang kanyang pagkakakilala. Marami siyang alam na śāstra at marunong makinabang sa mga aral ng mga dakilang tao. Minsan, natalo ang kanyang anak ng hari ng Sindhu at umuwi na lubhang lugmok, saka nahiga at natulog. Nang makita ng reynang si Vidulā ang kanyang tunay na anak sa gayong kalagayan, mariin niya itong pinuna. Sinabi ni Vidulā: “O anak, bagama’t isinilang ka sa aking sinapupunan, hindi ka nagdudulot ng galak sa akin. Sa halip, pinalalakas mo ang tuwa ng ating mga kaaway. Kaya napipilitan akong isipin na hindi ka tunay na ipinanganak sa akin, ni hindi ka rin inianak ng iyong ama—sapagkat kung hindi, saan nagmula ang isang duwag na tulad mo?”

Educational Q&A

A kṣatriya must not collapse into shameful passivity after defeat; cowardice strengthens the enemy. Vidulā uses harsh, honor-based rhetoric to shock her son into reclaiming courage, self-respect, and duty.

After Vidulā’s son returns home dejected and sleeps following defeat by Sindhurāja, Vidulā rebukes him. In this verse she sarcastically calls him “bringer of joy,” then declares that his behavior is so disgraceful that she can hardly believe he is truly her son.
