जातिं देशं च सत्यं च माहात्म्यं भरतर्षभ | धर्म वृत्ति च विज्ञाय क्षत्रियाणां नराधिप

jātiṃ deśaṃ ca satyaṃ ca māhātmyaṃ bharatarṣabha | dharmavṛttiṃ ca vijñāya kṣatriyāṇāṃ narādhipa rājan bharataśreṣṭha ||

Wika ni Vaiśampāyana: “O toro sa angkan ng mga Bharata, O hari—pinakamainam sa lahing Bharata—matapos matiyak ang angkan at lupang pinagmulan, ang katotohanan at kadakilaan, gayundin ang dharma at kaugalian ng mga kṣatriya, ilalarawan ko ngayon kung anong mga handog ang nararapat ialay sa mga brāhmaṇa sa bawat parvan kapag nagsimula na ang salaysay ng Mahābhārata.”
