Yudhiṣṭhira’s Lament for Karṇa and Renunciation-Oriented Self-Assessment (शोक-प्रलापः / त्याग-प्रवृत्तिः)

इह चामुत्र चैवेति कृपणा: फलहेतव: । इसी प्रकार सभी माताएँ उपवास

iha cāmutra caiveti kṛpaṇāḥ phala-hetavaḥ |

Sinabi ni Yudhiṣṭhira: “Sa pag-iisip na ‘sa mundong ito at sa kabilang-buhay din,’ ang mga kaawa-awa ay kumikilos na nakatuon sa bunga. Gayon din ang mga ina—nagnanais ng isang dakilang anak—nagsasagawa ng pag-aayuno, mga handog na yajña, mga panata, mga mapalad na ritwal at iba pang pagtalima; at sa loob ng sampung buwan ay inaalagaan at pinauunlad ang sanggol sa sinapupunan. Ito ang kanilang layon: kung ang mga bata’y maipapanganak nang ligtas, kung sila’y mabubuhay pagkapanganak, at kung sila’y lalaking malakas at may mabubuting katangian, magdudulot sila sa amin ng ligaya sa mundong ito at sa kabilang-buhay. Kaya ang mga nagdurusang ina ay naghahangad ng ‘bunga’ ng kanilang mga gawa.”
