Varṇa-dharma and Rājadharma: Yudhiṣṭhira’s Inquiry and Bhīṣma’s Normative Outline (वर्णधर्म-राजधर्म-प्रश्नोत्तरम्)
कीर्तिमांस्तस्य पुत्रो5भूत् सोडपि पठ्चातिगो5भवत् | कर्दमस्तस्य तु सुत: सोडप्यतप्यन्महत् तप:
kīrtimāṁs tasya putro ’bhūt so ’pi pañcātigo ’bhavat | kardamas tasya tu sutaḥ so ’py atapyat mahat tapaḥ |
Wika ni Bhīṣma: “Nagkaroon siya ng anak na nagngangalang Kīrtimān. Ang anak na iyon man ay lumampas sa limang bagay na hinahangad ng mga pandama at kumapit sa landas na patungo sa kalayaan. Pagkaraan, nagkaanak si Kīrtimān ng si Kardama; at siya rin ay nagsagawa ng dakilang pag-aayuno at pagninilay.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse praises transcendence of the five sense-objects and commitment to mokṣa through self-restraint and tapas, presenting renunciation as an inherited ideal within a righteous lineage.
Bhīṣma continues a genealogical account: a son named Kīrtimān is born, he becomes detached from sense-enjoyments and follows the liberation-path, and his son Kardama likewise engages in intense austerities.
