Chapter 57: Constant Royal Vigilance, Primacy of Protection, and Principles of Dismissal

राजानं प्रथम विन्देत्‌ ततो भार्या ततो धनम्‌ | राजन्यसति लोकस्य कुतो भार्या कुतो धनम्‌,“मनुष्य पहले राजाको प्राप्त करे। उसके बाद पत्नीका परिग्रह और धनका संग्रह करे। लोकरक्षक राजाके न होनेपर कैसे भार्या सुरक्षित रहेगी और किस तरह धनकी रक्षा हो सकेगी?”

rājānaṃ prathamaṃ vindet tato bhāryā tato dhanam | rājany asati lokasya kuto bhāryā kuto dhanam ||

Wika ni Bhishma: “Una, dapat munang matamo ang isang hari (makatarungang pamamahala); saka pa lamang kumuha ng asawa, at pagkatapos ay magtipon ng yaman. Sapagkat kung walang haring tagapagtanggol ng bayan, paano magiging ligtas ang asawa, at paano mapangangalagaan ang yaman?”
