Each being departs bearing only their own karma; therefore excessive attachment and the belief that the dead can be aided or can aid us in worldly terms is misguided. The verse urges sober detachment and ethical clarity grounded in the law of action and consequence.
Vyāsa is consoling and instructing his listener in the Śānti Parva’s reflective setting, redirecting attention from grief and dependence on others to the inevitability of one’s own departure and responsibility for one’s own deeds.
