Adhyātma–Adhibhūta–Adhidaivata Correspondences and the Triguṇa Lakṣaṇas (Śānti-parva 301)
The verse urges moral discernment: understand that addiction to intoxicants and violating the sanctity of the teacher’s household lead to an inauspicious destiny; therefore one should avoid such acts and cultivate restraint.
In Shanti Parva’s dharma instruction, Bhishma is advising on right conduct by citing examples of grave transgressions—liquor-addiction and pursuing the guru’s wife—and warning of their harmful consequences.
