Śānti-parva Adhyāya 3: Karṇa’s training under Rāma Jāmadagnya and the Bhārgava restriction on the Brahmāstra
गच्छेदानीं न ते स्थानमनृतस्येह विद्यते । न त्वया सदृशो युद्धे भविता क्षत्रियो भुवि,'जो ब्राह्मण नहीं है, उसके हृदयमें ब्रह्मासत्र कभी स्थिर नहीं रह सकता। अब तू यहाँसे चला जा। तुझ मिथ्यावादीके लिये यहाँ स्थान नहीं है, परंतु मेरे आशीर्वादसे इस भूतलका कोई भी क्षत्रिय युद्धमें तेरी समानता नहीं करेगा”
gacchedānīṃ na te sthānam anṛtasyeha vidyate | na tvayā sadṛśo yuddhe bhavitā kṣatriyo bhuvi ||
Wika ni Nārada: “Umalis ka na ngayon; walang lugar dito para sa kasinungalingan. Ang nabubuhay sa di-katotohanan ay walang paninindigan sa kapulungang ito. Ngunit sa aking pagpapala, walang kṣatriya sa ibabaw ng daigdig na magiging kapantay mo sa digmaan.”
नारद उवाच
Truthfulness is a prerequisite for moral legitimacy and social standing; prowess or success in war cannot compensate for ethical failure. The verse warns that untruth disqualifies one from rightful place even if one is granted extraordinary power.
Narada dismisses the addressed person from the present setting on the grounds of falsehood, declaring that there is no place there for one devoted to untruth. At the same time, he grants (or affirms) a boon that no kshatriya on earth will match that person in battle, creating a tension between ethical censure and martial capability.
