The Unmanifest, Prakṛtis, and the Sense-Complex
स्नेहपाशैर्बहुविधेरासक्तमनसो नरा: । प्रकृतिस्था विषीदन्ति जले सैकतवेश्मवत्
snehapāśair bahuvidhair āsaktamanaso narāḥ | prakṛtisthā viṣīdanti jale saikataveśmavat ||
Sinabi ni Parāśara: “Ang mga taong ang isip ay nakagapos sa sari-saring tali ng pag-ibig at pagkakapit ay lubhang nanlulumo kahit nananatili sa karaniwang kalagayan. Gaya ng bahay na buhangin na guguho sa tubig, sila’y halos mapahamak dahil sa matinding dalamhati.”
पराशर उवाच
Attachment (sneha) acts like a binding noose on the mind; when one’s happiness depends on such bonds, sorrow easily overwhelms and can bring a person close to ruin. The verse urges cultivating detachment and inner steadiness so that affection does not become bondage.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction on conduct and liberation-oriented wisdom, the sage Parāśara speaks to illustrate the fragility of worldly dependence. He uses the image of a sand-house collapsing in water to show how quickly an attached mind collapses under the pressure of loss and change.
