The verse uses the Indra–Vṛtra episode as a moral exemplum: when adharma becomes vulnerable, decisive action by the rightful protector restores order. It underscores the kṣatriya ideal of timely, effective force in defense of cosmic and social stability.
Vṛtra, afflicted by a fever, opens his mouth in a yawn; at that moment Indra (Śakra) releases the vajra. The thunderbolt penetrates Vṛtra’s body and splits him apart, and Bhīṣma narrates this to Bhārata (Yudhiṣṭhira).
