Instruction on the Cessation of Craving
परंतु मूढ़ मानव दान और यज्ञ-कर्मके फलके सिवा योग आदिके फलका अनुमोदन नहीं करते। वे उन मोक्षप्रद समस्त साधनोंके महत्त्वको न जाननेके कारण स्वर्ग आदि अन्य फलोंमें ही रुचि रखते हैं ।।
parantu mūḍhā mānavā dāna-yajña-karmaphalaṃ vinā yogādika-phalasya anumodanaṃ na kurvanti | te mokṣapradānāṃ sarva-sādhanānāṃ māhātmyaṃ ajānantaḥ svargādi-anyaphaleṣu eva ruciṃ kurvanti || svakarmabhiḥ saṃśritānāṃ tapo ghoratvam āgatam | tat sadācāram āśritya purāṇaṃ śāśvataṃ dhruvaṃ || kintu tasmin purāṇe śāśvate dhruve ca yaugike sadācāre āśritaḥ svakartavya-karmeṣu parāyaṇānāṃ jñānināṃ tapaḥ uttarottaraṃ tīvratāṃ prāpnoti |
Sinabi ni Kapila: “Ang mga nalilinlang ay pumupuri lamang sa nakikitang gantimpala ng pagkakawanggawa at mga handog na ritwal, at hindi kinikilala ang bunga ng yoga at mga kaugnay na disiplina. Sapagkat hindi nila nauunawaan ang kadakilaan ng lahat ng paraang nagdudulot ng moksha, nananatiling nakatuon ang kanilang panlasa sa iba pang gantimpala gaya ng langit. Ngunit para sa marurunong—yaong kumakapit sa sinauna, walang hanggan, at di-matitinag na yogic na tuntunin ng wastong asal, at nananatiling tapat sa sariling tungkulin—ang kanilang pag-aayuno at pagdidisiplina (tapas) ay lalo pang tumitindi at nagbabagong-anyo, umaakyat nang hakbang-hakbang tungo sa paglaya.”
कपिल उवाच
Kapila contrasts two orientations: seeking visible, heavenly rewards from charity and sacrifice versus valuing yoga, ethical discipline, and knowledge that lead to liberation. True austerity matures when grounded in steadfast right conduct and faithful performance of one’s duty, oriented toward moksha rather than temporary rewards.
In a didactic passage of the Shanti Parva, Kapila addresses the listener and critiques common religious motivation. He explains why many people remain attached to heaven-oriented ritual results, and then praises the wise who adopt an ancient, stable yogic code of conduct, through which their tapas deepens progressively.
