आत्मदर्शन-उपदेशः (Ātma-darśana Upadeśa) — Mind, Senses, and the All-pervading Self

एक हजार चतुर्युगका जो ब्रह्माका एक दिन बताया गया है और उतनी ही बड़ी जो उनकी रात्रि कही गयी है, उसको जो लोग ठीक-ठीक जानते हैं, वे ही दिन और रात अर्थात्‌ कालतत्त्वको जाननेवाले हैं ।। प्रतिबुद्धों विकुरुते ब्रह्माक्षय्यं क्षपाक्षये सृजते च पर | तस्माद्‌ व्यक्तात्मकं मन:,रात्रि समाप्त जाग्रत्‌ हुए ब्रह्माजी पहले अपने अक्षय स्वरूपको मायासे विकारयुक्त बनाते हैं फिर महत्तत्त्वको उत्पन्न करते हैं। तत्पश्चात्‌ उससे स्थूल जगत्‌को धारण करनेवाले मनकी उत्पत्ति होती है

vyāsa uvāca | eka-sahasra-caturyugā yā brahmaṇaḥ ahar ucyate, tāvatī caiva yā rātriḥ proktā; etad ye yathāvad viduḥ, te eva ahorātra-vidāḥ kāla-tattva-vidaḥ | rātry-ante pratibuddho brahmā akṣayyaṃ svam ātmānaṃ māyayā vikṛti-yuktaṃ karoti; tataḥ mahat-tattvaṃ sṛjate; tataś ca sthūla-jagat-dhāraṇaṃ mana utpadyate ||

Wika ni Vyāsa: Yaong mga tunay na nakaaalam na ang isang araw ni Brahmā ay binubuo ng isang libong siklo ng apat na yuga, at na ang kaniyang gabi ay kasinglawak din ng sukat na iyon—sila lamang ang nakaaalam ng araw at gabi, samakatuwid ay nakaaalam ng simulain ng Panahon. Kapag nagwakas ang gabi at nagising si Brahmā, una niyang ginagawang, sa pamamagitan ng māyā, ang kaniyang di-nasisirang pagkatao na maging may kakayahang magpakita at magbago; saka niya iniluluwal ang Dakilang Prinsipyo (mahat). Pagkaraan, mula roon ay sumisibol ang isip (manas), na siyang sumasandig at nag-aayos sa magaspang na daigdig.

True understanding of Time comes from grasping the immense, cyclic scale of cosmic day and night and seeing creation as a lawful sequence: the imperishable ground, through māyā, becomes manifest, giving rise to mahat and then mind that sustains the gross world.

Vyāsa explains the cosmic process at the end of Brahmā’s night: Brahmā awakens, initiates manifestation through māyā, produces the Great Principle (mahat), and from it mind arises, which organizes and supports the material universe.
