The Earlier Ideal Conduct of a Brahmana
River-of-Saṃsāra Metaphor
The verse highlights ethical universality: true dharmic character is shown by behaving appropriately toward all beings, not selectively. Proper conduct (yathāvat) is presented as a defining mark of the noble.
Bhishma is describing a group of beings/lineages by praising their conduct and then identifying their origin: they are born from Daksha’s daughters and are the powerful descendants of Prajapati Kashyapa.
