Indra and Namuci on grief, composure, and inevitability
यत् त्वसंतोषसंयुक्तमप्रीतिकरमात्मन: । प्रवृत्त रज इत्येवं ततस्तदपि चिन्तयेत्,जो अपने लिये असंतोषजनक एवं अप्रीतिकर हो, उसको रजोगुणकी प्रवृत्ति एवं अभिवृद्धि समझनी चाहिये
yat tv asaṃtoṣasaṃyuktam aprītikaram ātmanaḥ | pravṛttaṃ raja ity evaṃ tatas tad api cintayet ||
Sinabi ni Bhishma: “Anumang bagay na kaugnay ng kawalang-kasiyahan at hindi nagbubunga ng panloob na galak para sa sarili ay dapat maunawaan bilang pag-igting at pagdami ng rajas, ang gunang pinapagalaw ng pagnanasa at pagkabalisa. Kaya pagnilayan ito sa gayong paraan.”
भीष्म उवाच
If an impulse, action, or object leaves one dissatisfied and inwardly unpleased, it should be recognized as rajas in operation—restless, desire-driven agitation. The instruction is to label it correctly and reflect, so one can restrain or redirect oneself toward calmer, more wholesome states.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on right conduct and inner discipline, Bhīṣma is teaching Yudhiṣṭhira how to discern mental qualities (guṇas). Here he gives a practical diagnostic sign of rajas: whatever produces discontent and lack of inner joy should be understood as rajas becoming active, and should be contemplated accordingly.
