Subtle Dharma and the Primacy of Renunciation
The verse underscores that ethical conduct in war (yuddha-dharma) and competence in action require authoritative guidance; true excellence is not merely martial power but clear, reliable instruction grounded in dharma.
In Śānti Parva’s instructional setting, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses a revered instructor and acknowledges that no one equals him in explaining the duties of warfare and the skilled performance of necessary actions, thereby affirming the teacher’s authority before further counsel is sought.
