prādurbhūto ’smi te mitra suhṛttvaṃ ca mama tvayi | so ’haṃ tathā yatiṣyāmi bhaviṣyasi yathārthavān ||
Ethical guidance is grounded in goodwill: a true well-wisher does not merely express friendship but undertakes concrete effort so the other person attains artha—real, rightful benefit and stability in life.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction-setting, Bhishma addresses the listener as a friend, declares his benevolent intent, and promises to exert himself in teaching and guidance so that the listener may attain meaningful success (artha).
