Dama-pradhāna-dharma (Self-restraint as the Root of Dharma) — Śānti-parva 154

Even the closest family bonds are subject to separation; therefore one should understand the impermanence of worldly attachment (sneha) and cultivate steadiness and discernment in the face of loss.
In Bhishma’s instruction within the Shanti Parva, he reflects on how relatives, overwhelmed by sorrow, abandon even beloved kin and move on—eyes blurred with tears—illustrating the transient nature of human associations.
