The verse highlights how necessity—especially hunger and responsibility toward family—drives a person toward pragmatic choices like seeking a pact (sandhi). It implicitly frames ethical decision-making as shaped by one’s duties and circumstances, not merely abstract ideals.
Bhishma addresses someone who, with him in mind, is again searching for something to eat and is attempting to negotiate an agreement with Bhishma. The speaker points to the other person’s household responsibilities (son and wife) as a motive for seeking this settlement.
