Balarāma’s Pilgrimage Context
ततो<ब्रवीन्महात्मानं जैगीषव्यं स देवल: । विनयावनतो राजन्नुपसर्प्प महामुनिम्,राजन! इसके बाद महामुनि महात्मा जैगीषव्यके पास जाकर देवलने विनीतभावसे कहा--
tato 'bravīn mahātmānaṃ jaigīṣavyaṃ sa devalaḥ | vinayāvanato rājann upasarpya mahāmunim ||
Pagkaraan, lumapit si Devala sa dakilang muni, ang mataas ang loob na si Jaigīṣavya, na may kababaang-loob at paggalang, at nagsalita—
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights vinaya—humble, disciplined approach—as the proper foundation for seeking knowledge from a sage. Ethical learning is shown not merely as receiving information, but as approaching the wise with reverence and self-restraint.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Devala goes to the great sage Jaigīṣavya, approaches him respectfully, and begins to speak—setting up a dialogue where instruction or counsel is to follow.
