अध्याय १ — न्यग्रोधवनोपवेशनम् तथा द्रौणिनिश्चयः

Night at the Banyan and Drauṇi’s Resolve

पतड्डग्निसमां वृत्तिमास्थायात्मविनाशिनीम्‌ । न्यायतो युध्यमानस्य प्राणत्यागो न संशय:,“इधर मैंने राजा दुर्योधनके समीप पाण्डवोंके वधकी प्रतिज्ञा कर ली है। परंतु यह कार्य वैसा ही है, जैसा पतिंगोंका आगमें कूद पड़ना। मैंने जिस वृत्तिका आश्रय लेकर पूर्वोक्त प्रतिज्ञा की है, वह मेरा ही विनाश करनेवाली है। इसमें संदेह नहीं कि यदि मैं न्‍्यायके अनुसार युद्ध करूँगा तो मुझे अपने प्राणोंका परित्याग करना पड़ेगा

pataṅgāgnisamāṁ vṛttim āsthāyātmavināśinīm | nyāyato yudhyamānasya prāṇatyāgo na saṁśayaḥ ||

Sa pagyakap sa landas na gaya ng gamu-gamong sumusuong sa apoy—landas na nagdadala sa sariling kapahamakan—walang alinlangan: kung lalaban ako ayon sa katarungan at sa mga tuntunin ng digmaan, kailangan kong isuko ang aking buhay.
