अध्याय १ — न्यग्रोधवनोपवेशनम् तथा द्रौणिनिश्चयः

Night at the Banyan and Drauṇi’s Resolve

ततो निद्रावशं प्राप्ती कृपभोजी महारथौ । सुखोचितावदुःखाहौं निषण्णौ धरणीतले

tato nidrāvaśaṁ prāptau kṛpabhojī mahārathau | sukhocitāv aduḥkhārhau niṣaṇṇau dharaṇītale ||

Wika ni Sañjaya: Pagkaraan, dinaig ng antok ang dalawang dakilang mandirigmang-karwahe—si Kṛpa at si Kṛtavarmā, anak ni Bhoja—at sila’y nahulog sa malalim na tulog. Bagaman karapat-dapat sila sa ginhawa at hindi nararapat sa pagdurusa, gayon ma’y sa hubad na lupa pa rin sila nahimlay.
