Even when wrongdoing has occurred under one’s rule, a king must act to restore justice and dignity. Draupadī’s boon emphasizes liberation from unjust bondage, and Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s permission reflects a belated attempt at ethical repair after the adharma of the dice-hall.
In the aftermath of the dice-game humiliation, Draupadī asks that the Pāṇḍavas be freed from the status of slaves. Dhṛtarāṣṭra states that he granted this release and allowed them to depart with their chariots, weapons, and possessions, returning to Indraprastha.
