The verse highlights a dharma-principle: protecting one who depends on you (or whom you are bound to safeguard) is itself a source of religious merit. Truthfulness is honored, yet dharma is also contextual—one may fulfill righteousness by staying to protect rather than by following others into hardship.
The speaker frames a choice: if the brothers are determined to uphold truth by going away (e.g., to the forest), they may do so; but the addressed person is urged to remain and gain the merit of dharma specifically connected with providing protection to the speaker.
