Educational Q&A

In times of crisis, ethical decision-making should be brought before a competent assembly: the questioner must speak truthfully and frame the issue as a dharma-question, while the counsellors must deliberate impartially, free from desire and anger, grounding their counsel in dharma and satya.

Vidura describes the proper function of the royal assembly: a distressed person seeks the sabhā for guidance, and the sabhāsads are expected to pacify him through principled counsel. He then states the rule of procedure—truthful presentation by the petitioner and dispassionate, accurate deliberation by the council.
