Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Duryodhana Saṃvāda on Restraint and Rājānīti
Chapter 50
प्रलम्भं च शृणुष्वान्यद् वदतो मे नराधिप । अद्वारेण विनिर्गच्छन् द्वारसंस्थानरूपिणा | अभिहत्य शिलां भूयो ललाटेनास्मि विक्षत:,महाराज! एक और वंचना मुझे सहनी पड़ी, जिसे बताता हूँ, सुनिये। एक जगह बिना द्वारके ही द्वारकी आकृति बनी हुई थी, मैं उसीसे निकलने लगा; अत: शिलासे टकरा गया। जिससे मेरे ललाटमें बड़े जोरकी चोट लगी
pralambhaṃ ca śṛṇuṣvānyad vadato me narādhipa | advāreṇa vinirgacchan dvārasaṃsthānarūpiṇā | abhihatya śilāṃ bhūyo lalāṭenāsmi vikṣataḥ ||
Sinabi ni Duryodhana: “O hari, pakinggan mo pa ang isa pang kahihiyang aking isasalaysay. Sa bulwagang iyon ay may isang pook na walang tunay na pintuan, ngunit may anyong tila pintuan. Inakala kong labasan at nagtangkang dumaan, kaya’t bumangga ako sa batong ibabaw; malubha na naman ang sugat ng aking noo. Kaya’t tiniis ko ang isa pang mapanlinlang na paghamak.”
दुर्योधन उवाच
The passage highlights how pride and envy make one vulnerable to humiliation and misperception. Duryodhana interprets architectural illusion as deliberate deceit, intensifying resentment—an ethical warning about letting wounded ego harden into hostility.
In the wondrous assembly hall (noted for optical illusions), Duryodhana mistakes a door-like appearance for a real exit and walks into stone, injuring his forehead. He reports this as another act of deception and disgrace.
