अध्याय १: महाप्रस्थानारम्भः
The Commencement of the Great Departure
प्रस्थितान् द्रौपदीषष्ठान् पुरा द्यृूतजितान् यथा । हर्षोउभवच्च सर्वेषां भ्रातृणां गमन॑ प्रति
prasthitān draupadī-ṣaṣṭhān purā dyūtajitān yathā | harṣo 'bhavac ca sarveṣāṃ bhrātṝṇāṃ gamanaṃ prati ||
Wika ni Vaiśampāyana: Sa kanilang pag-alis—ang mga lalaking yaon na pinakadakila, ang limang magkakapatid na si Draupadī ang ika-anim—gaya ng dati nilang pagpunta sa gubat matapos matalo sa sugal ng dice, gayundin sa araw na iyon, ang mga babae sa lungsod ay umiyak nang makita silang lumisan. Ngunit para sa lahat ng magkakapatid, ang paglalakbay na ito mismo ay naging bukal ng dakilang galak.
