Chapter 1
एतनमे सर्वमाचक्ष्व विस्तरेण महामुने । न हि तृप्यामि पूर्वेषां शुण्वानश्वरितं महत्,महामुने! यह सारा वृत्तान्त आप मुझसे विस्तारपूर्वक कहें। मैं अपने पूर्वजोंका महान् चरित्र सुनकर तृप्त नहीं हो रहा हूँ
etan me sarvam ācakṣva vistareṇa mahāmune | na hi tṛpyāmi pūrveṣāṃ śṛṇvānāś caritaṃ mahat ||
Wika ni Janamejaya: “O dakilang pantas, isalaysay mo sa akin ang lahat ng ito nang buong detalye. Sapagkat hindi ako nasisiyahan—hindi ako nagsasawa—sa pakikinig sa mararangal at dakilang gawa ng aking mga ninuno.”
जनमेजय उवाच
The verse highlights śravaṇa (reverent listening) as a means of moral and cultural formation: the listener seeks detailed narration of ancestral exemplars, implying that remembering and hearing noble lives sustains values and guides conduct.
King Janamejaya urges the sage to continue the Mahābhārata account with fuller detail, expressing that he remains unsated by hearing the great deeds and character of his forefathers.
