Puruṣottama-yoga

The Discipline of the Supreme Person) — Chapter 15 (Bhagavadgītā

arjuna uvāca | dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṁ viṣṇo nabhaḥspṛśaṁ dīptam anekavarṇaṁ vyāttānanaṁ dīptaviśālanetraṁ bhītāntarātmā dhṛtiṁ na vindāmi śamaṁ ca viṣṇo || daṁṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni dṛṣṭvaiva kālānalasaṁnibhāni | diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa ||

Arjuna said: O Viṣṇu, seeing You—touching the sky, blazing, of many colors, with mouths gaping wide and with vast, radiant eyes—my inner self is shaken with fear; I find neither steadiness nor peace. And seeing Your mouths, terrible with fangs, like the fire of Time at the world’s end, I lose all sense of direction and find no refuge or comfort. Be gracious, O Lord of the gods, O Abode of the universe.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical-religious posture of surrender: when confronted with the overwhelming reality of the divine and the inexorable power of Time, human confidence collapses, and the proper response is humility and seeking grace rather than self-assertion.

Arjuna is beholding Kṛṣṇa’s cosmic form on the battlefield. The vision is so immense and terrifying—sky-touching radiance, gaping mouths, fang-filled faces like apocalyptic fire—that Arjuna loses composure and orientation, and he pleads for the Lord’s mercy.
