Devotion to the Personal vs. Contemplation of the Imperishable
śrībhagavān uvāca—he mahābāho! bhūya eva me paramaṁ guhyaṁ śṛṇu mad-vacanaṁ; yat te ’haṁ prīyamāṇāya hitakāmyayā vakṣyāmi.
The verse frames the ethical basis of instruction: the Lord speaks a ‘supreme secret’ not as mere doctrine, but out of compassion and a desire for Arjuna’s welfare, grounding spiritual teaching in love, trust, and responsibility.
On the battlefield setting of Bhīṣma Parva, Kṛṣṇa resumes counsel to Arjuna, signaling a renewed and deeper disclosure—an intimate, powerful teaching offered because Arjuna is dear and receptive.
