Bhīṣma-nipāta-saṃvāda — Sañjaya’s Report of Bhīṣma’s Fall (भीष्मनिपातसंवादः)
pitaraṃ bhīmakarmāṇaṃ bhīṣmam āhavśobhinam | ārti me hṛdaye rūḍhāṃ mahatīṃ putrahānijām ||
The verse highlights the moral consequence of war and misrule: attachment and wrongful choices culminate in irreversible loss, and grief becomes ‘rooted’ in the heart when one confronts the outcomes of one’s own side’s actions.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra laments the devastation of his sons and, in that anguish, recalls Bhīṣma—his venerable elder and the Kaurava commander—renowned for fearsome prowess and brilliance on the battlefield.
