Bhīmasena’s Engagement with Multiple Mahārathas
युधिष्ठिरो द्वादशभश्रि: प्रत्यविध्यत् पितामहम् | तदनन्तर धृष्टद्युम्मको भी अपने बाणोंद्वारा बीधकर महाबली भीष्मने सिंहके समान गर्जना की। तब नकुलने बारह, सात्यकिने तीन, धृष्टद्युम्नने सत्तर, भीमसेनने सात तथा युधिष्ठिरने बारह बाण मारकर पितामह भीष्मको घायल कर दिया ।। ३-४ ह ।। द्रोणस्तु सात्यकिं विद्ध्वा भीमसेनमविध्यत
sañjaya uvāca | yudhiṣṭhiro dvādaśabhiḥ pratyavidhyat pitāmaham | tad-anantaraṃ dhṛṣṭadyumno 'pi svabhir bāṇair vidhya mahābalī bhīṣmaḥ siṃha-iva garjanām akarot | tataḥ nakulaḥ dvādaśa, sātyakiḥ trīn, dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ saptatiṃ, bhīmasenaḥ sapta, yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dvādaśa bāṇān prahṛtya pitāmahaṃ bhīṣmaṃ vyathayām āsa | droṇas tu sātyakiṃ viddhvā bhīmasenam avidhyat |
Sinabi ni Sanjaya: Tinamaan ni Yudhishthira ang Matandang Ama, si Bhishma, ng labindalawang palaso. Pagkaraan nito, si Dhrishtadyumna man ay tumusok din sa kanya gamit ang sariling mga palaso; at ang makapangyarihang Bhishma, umuungal na parang leon, ay tumugon sa paglusob na iyon nang hindi nababawasan ang kanyang tapang. संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the harsh moral tension of dharma in war: even the most venerable elder (Bhishma) becomes a lawful target when duty demands it, yet true greatness is shown in steadfastness, courage, and adherence to one’s role rather than in hatred or cruelty.
Pandava warriors—Yudhishthira, Nakula, Satyaki, Dhrishtadyumna, and Bhima—shower Bhishma with arrows, wounding him; Bhishma responds with a lion-like roar, and the battle momentum shifts as Drona counters by striking Satyaki and then Bhima.
