Adhyāya 90: Babhruvāhana’s Reception and the Commencement of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Aśvamedha
न्यायलब्धैर्यथा सूक्ष्मै: श्रद्धापूते: स तुष्यति । “तात! अन्यायपूर्वक प्राप्त हुए द्रव्यके द्वारा महान् फल देनेवाले बड़े-बड़े दान करनेसे धर्मको उतनी प्रसन्नता नहीं होती, जितनी न्यायोपार्जित थोड़े-से अन्नका भी श्रद्धापूर्वक दान करनेसे उन्हें प्रसन्नता होती है ।।
nyāyalabdhair yathā sūkṣmaiḥ śraddhāpūtaiḥ sa tuṣyati | tāta! anyāyapūrvaka-prāptena dravyeṇa mahān phala-dāyakāni bṛhad-bṛhad dānāni kṛtvāpi dharmaḥ tāvat na prasīdati, yāvat nyāyopārjita-alpasya annasyāpi śraddhayā dānena prasīdati ||
Wika ng biyenan: “Anak ko, hindi tunay na nalulugod ang Dharma sa malalaking handog na sinasabing magbubunga ng dakilang gantimpala kung ang yaman ay nakuha sa di-makatarungang paraan; bagkus, kahit munting pagkain na marangal na kinita at inialay nang may taos-pusong pananampalataya ang higit na nakalulugod sa kanya. Ang kalinisan ng pinagmulan at ang paggalang ng nagbibigay ang mas mabigat kaysa laki ng handog.”
श्षशुर उवाच
Dharma values the purity of acquisition and the sincerity of faith over the magnitude of the gift: a small, honestly earned offering given with śraddhā surpasses lavish charity funded by unjust wealth.
A father-in-law (śvaśura) instructs the addressed ‘son’ (tāta), emphasizing ethical conduct in giving—warning that impressive donations do not compensate for wrongful means, while modest, rightful giving truly pleases Dharma.
