Attempt to Dissuade Kuntī; Commencement of Forest Residence
संजय उवाच य एष जाम्बूनदशुद्धगौर- स्तनुर्महासिंह इव प्रवृद्ध: । प्रचण्डघोण: पृथुदीर्घनेत्र- स्ताम्रायताक्ष: कुरुराज एष:,संजय बोले--ये जो विशुद्ध सुवर्णके समान गोरे और सबसे बड़े हैं, देखनेमें महान् सिंहके समान जान पड़ते हैं, जिनकी नासिका नुकीली तथा नेत्र बड़े-बड़े और कुछ-कुछ लालिमा लिये हुए हैं, ये कुरुराज युधिष्ठिर हैं
sañjaya uvāca | ya eṣa jāmbūnadaśuddhagauras tanur mahāsiṃha iva pravṛddhaḥ | pracaṇḍaghoṇaḥ pṛthudīrghanetras tāmrāyatākṣaḥ kururāja eṣaḥ ||
Sinabi ni Sañjaya: “Ang isang ito—na ang katawan ay maputi at maningning na parang dalisay na ginto ng Jāmbūnada, na tila lumaki at maringal na gaya ng dakilang leon; na ang ilong ay litaw at matatag, ang mga mata’y malalaki at mahahaba, at ang titig ay may bahid na mapulang parang tanso—siya ang hari ng Kuru, si Yudhiṣṭhira.”
संजय उवाच
The verse implicitly links righteous kingship with inner purity and dignified strength: Yudhiṣṭhira is portrayed as refined like purified gold and majestic like a lion, suggesting that ethical authority (dharma) should manifest as calm, mature, and steady power rather than mere aggression.
Sañjaya identifies and describes Yudhiṣṭhira through vivid physical and symbolic traits—golden purity, lion-like majesty, and distinctive eyes—so the listener can recognize the Kuru king and grasp his stature and presence in the scene.
