Chatra–Upānah Dāna: Origin Narrative
Jamadagni–Reṇukā–Sūrya Saṃvāda
विश्वामित्र उवाच करोतु भृतको<वर्षा राज्ञश्नास्तु पुरोहित: । ऋषच्विगस्तु हायाज्यस्य यस्ते हरति पुष्करम्
viśvāmitra uvāca—karotu bhṛtako ’varṣā rājñaḥ syān nāstu purohitaḥ | ṛtvig astu hy ayājyasya yaste harati puṣkaram ||
Sinabi ni Viśvāmitra: “Nawa’y ang nagnakaw ng iyong lotus ay maging upahang lingkod, ngunit magdulot ng tagtuyot—na humadlang sa ulan—sa bukirin ng kanyang amo. Nawa’y maging pari siya ng hari, at maging ṛtvij din, ang paring tagapagpaganap ng handog, para sa taong hindi karapat-dapat pag-alayan—upang maging kabahagi sa bunga ng mga kasalanang iyon.”
विश्वामित्र उवाच
The verse warns that wrongdoing (theft) and religious misconduct (serving as priest for an unqualified sacrificer) generate grave karmic consequences. It also highlights that ritual roles like purohita and ṛtvij carry ethical responsibility; misusing them makes one a participant in sin.
Viśvāmitra pronounces a punitive imprecation against the person who stole a lotus: despite becoming a servant, he will cause drought; despite attaining respected priestly positions, he will be tainted by officiating improper sacrifices, thereby sharing in their demerit.
