Certain grave transgressions—sexual misconduct with another’s spouse, killing one’s teacher, habitual lying, slander, and hostility toward brāhmaṇas—are presented as dharma-destroying vices that obstruct access to a righteous, heavenly realm reserved for the virtuous.
Bhīṣma (Pitāmaha), in his instruction on dharma during the Anuśāsana Parva, lists specific moral faults and declares their spiritual consequence: a person dominated by these vices cannot attain the auspicious world where the righteous dwell.
