Dāna-Śreṣṭhatā: Abhaya, Anugraha, and the Ethics of Honoring the Worthy (दानश्रेष्ठता: अभय-अनुग्रह-विप्रपूजा)

मुनिपुंगव! इक्कीस दिनोंतक एक करवटसे सोते रहना

Kuśika uvāca: Munipuṅgava! ekaviṁśati-dināni eka-karvaṭena śete, tata utthāya kiñcid apy anuktvā bahiḥ prayāti, sahasā antarhitaḥ bhavati, punaḥ darśanaṁ dadāti; punaḥ ekaviṁśati-dināni dvitīya-karvaṭena śete; utthāya tailābhyangaṁ kārayati; abhyaktaḥ san prayāti; punaḥ mama mahale nānā-vidhāni bhojanāni saṁgṛhya teṣu agniṁ dīpayitvā sarvaṁ dahati; tataḥ sahasā rathena ārūḍhaḥ nagara-paryaṭanaṁ karoti, dhanaṁ vikirati, divya-vanasya darśanaṁ kārayati; tatra bahūni suvarṇa-mayāni prāsādāni prādur-bhāvayati, maṇi-pravāla-pāda-pīṭhāni śayyāsanāni darśayati, ante ca sarvaṁ punar adṛśyaṁ karoti. Mahā-mune! etat sarvaṁ kṛtyaṁ tava yathārtha-kāraṇaṁ śrotum icchāmi. Bhṛgu-kula-ratna! etad vicārayataḥ mama atīva mohaḥ jāyate. Na caivātrādhigacchāmi sarvasyāsya viniścayam; etad icchāmi kārtsnyena satyaṁ śrotuṁ tapodhana.

Sinabi ni Kuśika: “O pinakadakila sa mga pantas! Dalawampu’t isang araw kang nakahiga sa isang tagiliran; saka pagbangon, lumalabas kang walang imik, biglang naglalaho, at muling nagpapakita. Muli, dalawampu’t isang araw kang nakahiga sa kabilang tagiliran; pagbangon, nagpapapahid ka ng langis, at matapos mapahiran ay umaalis. Pagkaraan, bumabalik ka sa aking palasyo, nagtitipon ng sari-saring pagkain, sinisindihan at sinusunog. Pagkatapos, bigla kang sumasakay sa karwahe, naglilibot sa labas ng lungsod, nagkakalat ng kayamanan, ipinakikita ang isang kagila-gilalas na gubat; doon ay ipinahahayag mo ang maraming gintong palasyo, ipinapakita ang mga higaan na ang mga paa’y inukitan ng hiyas at korales, at sa huli’y muli mong pinapawi ang lahat. Dakilang muni! Nais kong marinig ang tunay na dahilan ng lahat ng gawaing ito. Hiyas ng angkan ni Bhṛgu! Kapag ito’y aking pinagninilayan, matinding pagkalito ang sumasaklaw sa akin. Kahit pag-isipan ko, hindi ako makarating sa anumang pasya; kaya, O asceta na mayaman sa pag-aayuno at pagninilay, ninanais kong marinig ang buong katotohanan.”
