गोमूल्यनिर्णयः — The Determination of Value through the Cow

यथा चतुर्ष वर्णेषु द्वयोरात्मास्य जायते । आनन्तर्यात्‌ प्रजायन्ते तथा बाह्या: प्रधानत:

yathā caturṣu varṇeṣu dvayor ātmāsya jāyate | ānantaryāt prajāyante tathā bāhyāḥ pradhānataḥ ||

Wika ni Bhishma: “Kung paanong sa apat na varṇa, ang anak na inianak sa loob ng sariling varṇa—o mula sa babaeng isang antas na mas mababa nang hindi nilalaktawan ang gitnang antas—ay ibinibilang pa rin sa varṇa ng ama; ngunit kapag nilabag ang hangganan sa paglalaktaw ng isang antas, ang anak ay karaniwang itinuturing na ‘panlabas’ sa varṇa ng ama at iniaangkop sa mas mababang katayuan ng ina. Gayon din sa siyam na halong pamayanan (gaya ng Ambaṣṭha, Pāraśava, Ugra, Sūta, Vaidehaka, Cāṇḍāla, Māgadha, Niṣāda, at Āyogava): kung magkaanak sila sa loob ng sarili nilang pamayanan o sa kasunod na mas mababang pamayanan, ang anak ay itinuturing na kauri ng ama; ngunit kung magkaanak sila matapos laktawan ang isang pamayanan, ang anak ay itinuturing na kabilang sa mas mababang pamayanan ng ina.”

Bhīṣma lays out a rule-of-thumb for assigning a child’s social status in cases of unions across groups: if the union is within the same group or with the immediately lower group (no skipped intermediary), the child is counted with the father; if an intermediate group is skipped, the child is treated as ‘outside’ the father’s group and aligned with the mother’s inferior status.
