Adhyāya 39 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s inquiry on attachment (saṅga) and relational restraint

The verse teaches disciplined receptivity to wise counsel: one should listen to the satisfied and virtuous (here, brāhmaṇas), understand their words with discernment (medhā), and maintain steady inner composure (samādhi) while keeping one’s intentions and thoughts aligned with dharmic guidance.
Śambara describes his own conduct: he accepts what the contented brāhmaṇas tell him, internalizes it intelligently, and continually maintains a respectful, favorable mental orientation toward them—presenting himself as one who lives by counsel and disciplined alignment with the learned.
