तीर्थवंशोपदेशः

Tīrtha-vaṃśa Upadeśa: Instruction on the Fruits of Sacred Waters

(पालाशो द्विजदण्ड: स्यादश्वत्थ: क्षत्रियस्य तु । औदुम्बरश्न वैश्यस्य धर्म एष युधिष्ठिर ।।

bhīṣma uvāca |

pālāśo dvijadaṇḍaḥ syād aśvatthaḥ kṣatriyasya tu |

audumbaraś ca vaiśyasya dharma eṣa yudhiṣṭhira ||

dātuḥ pratigrahītuś ca dharmādharmāv imau śṛṇu |

brāhmaṇasyānṛte 'dharmaḥ proktaḥ pātakasaṃjñitaḥ |

caturguṇaḥ kṣatriyasya vaiśyasyāṣṭaguṇaḥ smṛtaḥ ||

Wika ni Bhishma: “Para sa isang Brahmana, ang tungkod ay dapat mula sa kahoy na palāśa; para sa isang Kshatriya, mula sa aśvattha (banal na punong igos); at para sa isang Vaishya, mula sa udumbara (cluster fig). O Yudhishthira, ito ang naitatag na tuntunin ng dharma. Ngayon pakinggan ang tama at mali hinggil sa nagbibigay at tumatanggap ng handog. Ang pagkakasalang tinatawag na ‘kasalanan’ na itinatakda para sa isang Brahmana kapag siya’y nagsisinungaling, ay itinuturing na apat na ulit para sa isang Kshatriya at walong ulit para sa isang Vaishya.”
