मुहूर्तमिव च ध्यात्वा व्यास: सत्यवतीसुतः । नृपं शयानं गाड़ेयमिदमाह वचस्तदा,तब दो घड़ीतक ध्यान करनेके पश्चात् सत्यवती-नन्दन व्यासने वहाँ सोये हुए गंगानन्दन महाराज भीष्मजीसे इस प्रकार कहा--
muhūrtam iva ca dhyātvā vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ | nṛpaṃ śayānaṃ gāṅgeyam idam āha vacas tadā ||
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: Matapos magnilay na wari’y sandali lamang, si Vyāsa, anak ni Satyavatī, ay nagsalita kay Bhīṣma—ang haring isinilang mula sa Gaṅgā—na nakahimlay sa kanyang higaan, at sinabi ang mga salitang ito.
वैशम्पायन उवाच

Vaiśampāyana narrates that Vyāsa, after a brief contemplation, speaks to Bhīṣma (the Gaṅgā-born king) who is lying down, introducing the forthcoming discourse.
